Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow indicating a long winter and boy do I believe it. The weather is cold and so are the people in it. Coughing, sneezing, and runny noses, get me out of here! It’s a scary time, but hopefully my top 10 anti-sick tricks can help keep you healthy and kick the cold fast.

  1. Oil of Oregano – This is something I start to take the moment I or anyone around me starts to feel a cold coming on. My mum and I swear by the stuff! You know the ads for Buckley’s Cough Syrup? “It tastes bad, but it works.” Well, that is the case here. All you have to do is put a few drops under your tongue and hold it there for as long as you can. I’ll often have a coughing fit after, but don’t worry, that and the burning sensation are normal. I know you are probably thinking I’m crazy but I promise you won’t be disappointed!
  2. Echinacea – Unfortunately because of the medication I am on I am unable to take Echinacea, but if I could I would. It helps to boost your immune system and is a great one to start taking as soon as the cold & flu season starts.  Hopefully with this you can skip being sick all together.
  3. Vitamin C – This one, as I’m sure you all know, is a big one. Whether it is eating oranges or taking a supplement, load up on the stuff.
  4. Kombucha – It boosts the immune system; do I need to say more? I love to drink this daily and when cold and flu season hits it becomes my best friend. Kombucha is amazing for so many reasons, I’m sure I’ll dive more into this in a later blog post.
  5. Tea – I’m already obsessed with tea but it’s a great thing when trying to fight off bugs. There are amazing teas, like throat coat, cold 911, and lemon & ginger, that are specifically made to help you feel better when a cold hits. Other teas like peppermint and green tea can also help keep you safe from evil germs.
  6. Lemon, Honey, and Ginger – Even better than the tea is all natural lemon juice, raw honey, and fresh ginger. This is a great remedy for a sore throat or a bedtime soother.
  7. Garlic Sandwich – This is one that is a bit dangerous. It’s bread, butter, and raw garlic. I wouldn’t recommend this one if you are going to be around people that day or the next few days after, my ex-roommate can vouch for this. You will smell like garlic (this is an understatement, your whole house will) but good god does it work! Throwing some parsley on top of the open faced sandwich can help keep the garlic breath in check.
  8. Salt Water – Doing a hot sea salt rinse is a great way to kill germs when you have a sore throat, just make sure to let your boiled water cool before you start to gargle.
  9. Hot Steam – Whether you have access to a steam room or you are like me and have your head over a bowl of boiled water with a towel over your head, this is a great way to clear your sinuses while also improving your complexion.
  10. Fluids – Drinking lots of water is always an important part of a healthy diet, but when you are sick it is extra important. Try to double up on your water intake if you can. This will help flush out all the bad toxins and make you feel healthy and new again.
